About · The people behind the work

Empathy. Curiosity. Idealism. Tenacity.

Cog is a small, deliberate design studio. We take on the parts of a machine that keep people up at night — and we treat them with the seriousness they deserve.

Four traits decide whether hard hardware gets built. We hire and work for all four.

§01What we're made of
01

Practical empathy

We start with the people who have to live with the design — the technician at the bench, the reviewer signing off, the engineer on call at 2am. A part that ignores them isn't finished.

02

Curiosity as the engine

We'd rather ask the question everyone is avoiding than defend an answer we already like. The interesting failures live in the assumptions nobody re-checks.

03

Grounded idealism

We believe the right design exists for every problem — lighter, simpler, more honest — and that it's worth the argument to find it.

04

Tenacity over talent

The problems we take on don't yield to cleverness. They yield to someone who refuses to put them down until the machine tells the truth.

§02How it feels to work with us

The detail behind a calm phone call.

Failure modes, named first
We list how a design can fail before we make it better. Calm comes from having already looked.
One person accountable
You talk to the person doing the work. Nothing gets lost in a hand-off that never happened.
Tolerances stacked by hand
We don't trust a stack-up we haven't walked through ourselves, at least twice.
Reviews you can defend
Every recommendation comes with the reasoning, so you can stand behind it in the room.
No surprises late
Bad news travels fast here. You'll hear about a problem while it's still cheap to fix.
Written down, not just said
Decisions get recorded with their why, so the rationale outlives the meeting.
